The Church of St. Veronica is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, located at 153 Christopher Street between Greenwich and Washington Streets in the West Village area of the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The parish was established in 1887,〔 and the church was built between 1890 and 1903. It is locate within the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission's Greenwich Village Historic District Extension I, which was designated in 2006.〔 ==History== The parish was founded in 1887 to accommodate the increased number of Catholics in the area, which had caused the Church of St. Joseph in Greenwich Village to become overcrowded; it was one of 99 new parishes created by Archbishop Michael A. Corrigan between 1887 and 1902.〔 The parish's first Mass was celebrated in a former stable on Washington Street, near Barrow Street〔 The first pastor was the Rev. John Fitzharris, who had previously been the first assistant pastor at St. Joseph's.〔 He was succeeded after his death in 1893 by the Rev. Daniel McCormick.〔 The Rev. Joseph F. Flannelly succeeded McCormick after the latter's death in 1904.〔 In 1914, the parish had a Catholic population of around 6,500.〔
